How to use beard oil

How to use beard oil

Surely it's easy to apply beard oil right? Yes and no, there are a few things to take into consideration before you dive on in.

Firstly, not all beard are built equal! What we mean by this is that what works for one person, might not be the best for you. For instance, Add finds that his beard is like a sponge, it’ll soak up all the oil he can chuck at it, whereas mine doesn’t absorb the oil quite as fast. The offshoot of this is that Add will use more oil, more often throughout the day, and I’ll use less.

As a rough rule, a few drops in the palm of your hand (the size of a 5p coin) should be enough, but it is always better to start small and add more if needed, nobody wants to have a super wet looking beard that will just cover all your best clothes on oil.

Before we jump into the “how”, here are some reasons “why” you should use beard oil:

  • Softens and protects beard hair.
  • Softens and protects skin.
  • Moisturises hair and skin.
  • Replaces lost natural oils.
  • Helps make beard hair more manageable.
  • Contains Antioxidants (depending on ingredients).
  • Reduces hair damage like split ends.
  • Antiseptic and mild astringent properties (depending on ingredients).
  • Reduce skin irritation (especially while growing a beard).
  • Natural oils such as Argan oil, Jojoba oil and Hemp Seed oil.

And now for the "how to use beard oil"

So, here is the “how”, and you can adapt this to your needs as this is just what works for me. Let's start with a clean slate, you’ve just showered and dried your beard (how to best dry your beard is a whole different story, one for another day). Take your desired amount of beard oil and gently rub it in your hands and between your fingers so that it is evenly spread. Starting from the neckline, run your fingers up through your beard and down to the skin, this will help moisturize your skin as the beard hair will dry it out. Repeat this in an outward motion from your chin towards your ears making sure to get right down to the skin. Once you’re happy that you’ve coated all the hair from underneath you can start to coat the top. I like to start with my fingers each side of my moustache centerline and work out and down, making sure to work all along the cheek line too.

How often to use beard oil

For me, once a day as a general rule, that being said, if I'm heading staring out after work I'll use a little more oil and give the beard a good comb to get any tangles out.

In a nutshell, that is my routine and that works best for me, as mentioned before, this is a guide to help you on your way, take what you want and leave the rest. That being said, we’re always happy to offer advice so please feel free to contact us via email or social media.

Have a MADD day,

Marc
